Vitamins, minerals and energy.

UPDATED Dec 12, 2025. Happy to say blood work looks great, Ferritin, Iron, Vit D and Vit A are all back up into the normal range.

I had been living a very active life since I was in my late 30’s. I started road biking, and then mountain biking and loved it. Mountain biking became my to go to exercise, and I loved peddling up the longest hills I could find. I took part in many races, single and multi day events, never really too win but to see what I was capable of doing, to see new wilderness areas and meet good people. Living with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) gave me a reason to take care of myself and keep pushing myself, I figured if I was able to ride a bike as much as I did there wasn’t anything wrong with me. In July 2023 polyps in my duodenum started to show signs  of change, and a large flat adenoma was un able to be removed, so I decided to have the Whipple Surgery in Nov 2023. The surgery went okay, biopsies of the large adenoma showed high grade dysplasia and I had a lot of complications after. As a result of the complications I was put on TNP feeding, then transitioned to a Nasal Gastric Feeding tube. I lost 13 kgs and it took me a long time to get back to a healthy weight.

What I found help me get back to a active life, and healthy weight( 62kgs) was eating smaller amounts more frequently each day. I have 8 to 9 small meals or snacks a day and take 1 Viokace ( Pancreatic enzymes) pill each time. At first I really focused on high protein and calories. Insure and Boost meal replacement drinks helped. As soon as the Doctor and Dietitian gave me the okay I started adding vitamins and minerals to my daily intake. After the first blood work it showed low Ferritin, Vitamin D, Zinc and Selenium. I added more of these Vitamins and Minerals to my daily intake, along with a diet of chicken, fish, pasta, eggs, fruit, some vegetables, nuts, yogurt, cereal, etc. I know my diet is low in vegetables but I have had digestive issues in the past, causing partial bowel obstructions as a result of scar tissue from my Subtotal Colectomy surgery in 1980, but for some reason my blood works is relatively good.  I have had to work hard, stay focused and be consistent with my intake but it has got me back to a level of activity I wasn’t sure would be possible.

Here is a list of what I take each day:
I drink 2 Boost meal replacement drinks a day.
Vitamin D3/K2 softgel ( D3 1000iu, K2 120mcg) 1 a day
Tsp Liquid Calcium/Vitamin D 1 a day. ( Calcium 1000 mg, Vitamin D 400 iu)
2drop liquid Vitamin D ( 1000 iu) 1 time a day
2 drops liquid Vitamin A (A 10000 iu) 1 time a day
Soft gel  Vitamin A (A 10000 iu) 2 time a day
Iron tablet and Chewable Vitamin C pill 1 a day.( Iron 300 mg, Vitamin C 500 mg)
Tbs Vitamin Tonic ( Iron 5 mg, Vit B3 6.6mg, B2 0.9mg, B1 0.6mg)
Potassium Tablet ( aprox 30 mg) 1 a day
Magnesium Tablet ( aprox 150 mg) 1 a day
Vitamin B12 tablet ( 500 mcg) 1 a day
Zinc tablet ( 25 mg) 2 times a week
Selenium tablet ( 25 mcg) once a week, but eat 2 Brazil nuts each day)

Aug 2024, celebrating returning to one of my Happy Places.

Mountain biking after Whipple Surgery.

I wasn't sure what life would be like after my Pancreaticoduodenectomy or "The Whipple" in Nov 2023, my big concern was the change in quality of life and would I be able get back on the mountain bike. The surgery it's self went really well they tell me, but on the start of the second week, when I should have been going home I developed several leaks and this was the beginning of a long difficult recovery . I started to worry that this was what my new normal would be like, but some how found the drive and energy to walk as much as I could while spending 140 days in the hospital. I kept telling my self this would help me get back to the life I wanted. Friends and family helped support me, gave me the energy I need and reminded me to keep my sense of humour.  A group of friends, family, and strangers put to together a Gofund Me campaign and bought me a Rocky Mountain Instinct Ebike , at first I wasn't sure how to take it. Did they think I wasn’t going to ever be ab...

A short summary of the Whipple Surgery, Pancreaticoduodenectomy, and the complications.

A short summary of the Whipple Surgery, Pancreaticoduodenectomy , the complications, and 140 day Hospital stay that followed. Most of the information is a direct copy from my Hospital discharge report (spelling mistakes have not been corrected). I have added some other information, those notes are in italics. Warning medically graphic picture links included. A more complete summary, with pictures maybe seen here : https://fap-whipple-report.blogspot.com/2025/01/a-summary-of-key-events-for-whipple_10.html I had the Whipple Surgery in Nov 2023, it seemed to go well, 4 hrs of less in the OR. Normal as it could be the 1st few days, mild pain, walking as often as I could. Nov 24, 2023 Nurses note “ Abdomen +++ distended and firm.” “ Patient now complaining of 10/10 pain and laying in bed in fetal position holding abdomen.” “ Pending CT, form completed, IV access available.” Nov 26,2023 Nurses note “ CT abdomen pelvis ordered on Friday. Still not done on Sunday. Action: I spoke...

The importance of advocating for your self.

I went into the Whipple Surgery , Nov 17, 2023, with the belief that I would be home in 7 days and recovered in 3 months. The surgery it’s self went okay they tell me, but 4 days later I developed a pancreaticojejunostomy (PJ) leak , followed by hepaticojejunostomy (HJ) leak and there were delays in acting on these complications. It got so bad 2 of my close friends had to come in and talk to the medical team to find out why a CT scan ordered on Nov 24, 2023 still wasn’t done 2 days after it was ordered. By the time the CT scan was done things had gotten much worst and it was the start of a very long recovery . This when I started to notice it was very important for me to pay attention, advocate for my self and my health care. Nobody knows your body and how you feel better than you.  Unfortunately I didn’t start making notes or taking pictures until I was discharged, Jan 5, 2024, after 50 days in the hospital. I was sent home with 2 drains and a very active leak that was com...
